Overview
This course has been designed to give you a greater understanding of passive fire protection and follows on from the level 2 course. It covers all the fundamental principles but goes into more depth in certain areas. The course has been designed to assist those preparing to sit the IFE Level 3 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection.
From March 2025, the Institution of Fire Engineers is pleased to announce that their Passive Fire Protection exams (Level 2 and Level 3) will only be available online in a multiple-choice format, providing a more accessible and flexible testing experience for all candidates.

- Principles of fire
- Human behaviour
- Basic principles of Means of Escape
- Important aspects of passive fire protection
- Elements of a cladding system
- Fire performance requirements of curtain walling and cladding systems
- Testing of cavity barriers
- Building performance in fire
- Fire testing, assessment and product certification
- Development of a fire strategy
- Active fire protection
- Regulation
- Fire protection to the structural frame of the building
- Fire resisting walls, floor and ceilings
- Fire resisting glazing
- Fire stopping and penetration seals, cavity barriers and the building envelope, ductwork and dampers
- Fire resisting doors, industrial shutters and associated hardware
- Building regulations, approved documents and passive fire protection
Exams will take place on Monday 7th October 2024. For all key dates and information, please see below. The closing date for submitting a booking for the October 2024 examinations has now passed. The IFE is no longer accepting bookings.
