Aim:

This course provides a comprehensive examination of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) render systems, commonly used in external wall insulation for low- and mid-rise buildings.

Participants will gain an understanding of how these systems are built, their thermal efficiency benefits, and critically, the significant fire safety concerns they pose.

Through a detailed review of fire behaviour, regulatory standards, system testing (including BS 8414), real-world fire incidents, and failure modes, the course explores the serious risks of hidden fire spread, delayed ignition detection, and toxic smoke release.

The content also examines legal use cases, post-Grenfell regulatory shifts, and advises on best practices for mitigating risk where EPS is present.

Finally, the course challenges attendees to consider whether combustible insulation like EPS has a defensible place on modern building façades, especially in medium to high-rise construction, given real-world construction limitations and enduring fire safety concerns.  People in similar buildings had severe concerns about the cladding on their buildings and were concerned about 3 things, was it a combustible cladding, has it got a ventilated cavity and are there fire barriers installed at the correct locations. To prevent future tragedies it is a good idea to remove combustible cladding and adding fire barriers.
