Aim:
The aim of this program is to provide comprehensive, evidence-based knowledge on BESS technology, safety, and regulation, enabling informed decisions and confident oversight by all stakeholders involved in the siting, approval, and management of battery storage projects.
Learning Objectives
-
After completing this course, learners will:
- Understand what Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are, how they function, and why they are essential to achieving the UK’s Net Zero 2050 goals.
- Be able to explain how BESS stabilise the grid, integrate renewable energy, and replace fossil‑fuel “peaker” plants
- Recognise the differences between key battery chemistries, particularly the safety advantages of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP). Understand the layered “defence‑in‑depth” safety architecture that prevents, detects, and contains incidents such as thermal runaway.
- Become familiar with the UK and international standards that govern BESS design, installation, and emergency management, including UL 9540A, BS 7671, and NFCC 2023 Guidance.
- Understand approved emergency response procedures and how coordination between site operators and fire services ensures responder safety.
- Understand how planners, regulators, and insurers to confidently evaluate BESS proposals for safety, compliance, and risk.
- Finally, learners will appreciate how emerging technologies, sustainability practices, and circular‑economy principles are shaping the future of battery energy storage.
