Aim:

This course introduces the principles and practice of developing a fire strategy, explaining its purpose, legal context, key design elements, and stakeholder roles. Learners gain the skills to interpret regulations, apply core fire‑safety principles, and create a compliant outline fire‑strategy document

After completing this course, learners will:

  • Define and explain what a fire strategy is, including its purpose, scope, and role in achieving life safety, property protection, and compliance.
  • Differentiate between a fire strategy, compartment survey, design review, and fire risk assessment, identifying when and how each is applied.
  • Interpret and apply the key legal and regulatory frameworks governing fire safety — including Building Regulations, Approved Document B, Regulation 38, and the Fire Safety Order.
  • Identify and describe the core components of a fire strategy document (e.g., means of escape, fire resistance, detection and suppression, firefighting access, management).
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders (architects, fire engineers, building control, fire officers, clients) in the fire strategy process.
  • Recognise how the fire strategy aligns with the RIBA Plan of Work and the building lifecycle from design through to occupation and management.
  • Apply the fundamental principles of fire safety design — prevention, detection, suppression, evacuation — using both prescriptive and performance-based approaches.
  • Analyse how building use, occupancy profile, and risk factors influence fire safety objectives and design decisions.
  • Evaluate how legislation, standards (BS 9999, BS 9991, BS 7974), and performance criteria interact to achieve compliance and demonstrate equivalent safety.
  • Develop and document a simple outline fire strategy, demonstrating integration of design principles, regulatory compliance, and management provisions
